Pazar was founded by Pompeius under the name of Athena in the 64th century BC.
Athena which is a Greek word means reason, beauty and wisdom in Latin.
Athena which was founded by Roman Consul Pompeius was under the control of Rome
for a long time. Athena became a refuge for the Greeks, Georgians, Mingrelians
and Armenians who were escaping from invaders of the time, because Athena has
steep mountains that hard to pass.
After the birth of the Islam, especially southern parts of Anatolia were
besieged during the Umayyad period. However, any document was not found
indicating a sign of Muslims in Athena.
The county’s direct connection to Islam began with conversion of the Turks to
Islam. Pazar and vicinity totally converted to the Islam in 1054.
After the conquest of Empire of Trebizond by Mehmed the Conqueror in 1461, Rize
is completely captured by the Ottomans. Since Athena joined the Turkish
sovereignty, Pazar was given as a Timar land to the Ali Pasha and his commanders.
Some people of Erzurum were settled in Rize in the Selim I Period.
Pazar was ruled as timar for a long time in Ottoman Period. Before the Batum’s
giving to Russia, Batum connected to Pazar for a long time and it became a
county in 1864.
Our county was occupied by Russians in 1916, and liberated from the occupation
in 1918. In the Turkish Republican Period, the name of the city changed from
Athena to Pazar in 1928.
